The 26 x 1.75 Schwalbe Winter Marathons weren't much use, even running at super low pressure (enough so that I wasn't going to venture far from my place).

In contrast, when I went out yesterday to check out the trails, I wouldn't have been at all comfortable on the 2.2, as they lacked the studs I ended up finding quite necessary in a number of spots.

In retrospect, I should have gone with the Nokian Extremes (fat and studded).MBhttp://blacknell.net/dynamic/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-175657100849576118.post-70448983557094729352011-01-28T10:57:05.865-08:002011-01-28T10:57:05.865-08:00I've been very cocky about not taking seriousl...I've been very cocky about not taking seriously the ice we've been getting. In the past snowy and icy days, my 2001 Specialized StumpJumper's MASTER 26" tires were successful and more - perhaps the weight of the high weight of the bike helps the tires on the thinner ice sheets.

Yesterday, I could not do a thing on the thick packed ice, my failure was monumental. Several cat falls amused me but ultimately discouraged me, so I made my way home.

I got the Nokian 26" Hakkapeliitta W240s. I've been counseled to ride these on dry roads for 15-20 miles before I have them tackle icy roads.JPnoreply@blogger.com
